Why do you love your work?
I love the constant creative problem solving in structural engineering. Everyday always brings a new challenge, and I love the process of figuring out how to solve it. I'm always learning and wanting to learn more. I also enjoy the collaborative aspect in this job, both within the office and with other disciplines. It's amazing to see how a team can put together a whole building from start to finish. And lastly, I love that I'm able to make a helpful impact in my own community through the built environment.
Why did you become an engineer?
Growing up, math and art were always my two favorite subjects. Naturally, I wanted to find a career that could incorporate my math skills and creative side, and engineering seemed like the perfect blend. It was also important to me that I find a career where I could make some kind of positive impact. Structural engineering ticked all these boxes for me, and I've come to really enjoy it.
Do you have a favorite project and why?
My favorite project is a seismic evaluation I did for a two-story concrete and masonry shear wall building from the 1960s. It was my first project here using ASCE 41, which was both challenging and very exciting. Like any seismic evaluation/retrofit, the project was very detail oriented and required a lot of deep dives and discussions about the code. It was also fascinating seeing the design, construction, and the structural drawings from back then.
Special interests outside of work:
In my free time I enjoy watching TV shows and movies. I like a good psychological thriller! I also enjoy going to concerts, watercolor painting, and rock climbing.
